  • On June 10, Jason Fuchs launched his One Blue Brick Challenge to trade one blue Lego brick for help in building an activity center for children with special needs. He told Kaitlyn Pratt why the challenge works and shared details of his trades so far (the effort continues).  FOX 5 Atlanta

  • A new restaurant called Panchos Tacos & Tequila will soon open in Athens at the former Pulaski Heights BBQ at 675 Pulaski St.& The restaurant will serve tacos, burritos, and tamales and offer Taco Tuesday specials with $1.99 tacos from 2 p.m. until close.  Athens Banner-Herald

CULTURE NEWS

  • Athens’ 25th annual Hot Corner Celebration and Soul Food Festival honors local Black entrepreneurs with a week of events that began on June 9 and will continue with gospel revivals and local art until an all-day block party on Saturday, June 14 from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.—the free event brings live music, soul food, and community history together downtown.  Flagpole
  • The Classic Center Cultural Foundation launched 'A Heart for Art'—a drive asking community members to donate art supplies, like crayons and glue sticks, to support Clarke County elementary schools for creative projects next school year. The donation drive runs from June 1 through August 1 and all items must be in by 5 p.m. on August 1.  The Red & Black

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Clarke County School District has pre-K spots open for the 2025-26 school year at early learning centers and several elementary schools in Athens where children must turn four by September 1, and families must provide two proofs of residency, a parent or guardian ID, the child’s birth certificate, a social security card, and a Georgia immunization form (in-person registration assistance is available at the district office).  WUGA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Computation and canvassing of ballots from the Special Primary & Municipal Election begin Tuesday, June 17 at 7:30 p.m. at the Facilities and Landscape training room at 2555 Lexington Road in Athens—provisional and absentee ballots will be reconciled Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. at the Elections Department on 155 East Washington Street.  Athens-Clarke County
  • After months without a working elevator, the Athens-Clarke County Courthouse reopened on June 10 for public business. Chief Judge Lisa Lott said state inspectors approved the building and improvements such as cleaning, painting, carpeting, and a new audiovisual system are underway as the county prepares for a new courthouse.  WUGA

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • On June 3, the commission approved a 900-unit residential development off Atlanta Highway near Bogart, including 396 single-family homes, 216 townhouses and 313 apartments—considered the largest project of its kind in Athens history. Planning commissioners objected to the changes from the original mixed-use design while local officials and town hall participants supported the proposal, and the commission tabled a 300-house subdivision and other projects for a vote on June 10.  Flagpole

  • For Father's Day this Sunday, June 15, Golfing Georgia ranked 19 of the state's best courses, and the University of Georgia Golf Course in Athens came in as the No. 5 course—local golfers can plan a day on one of the top spots to celebrate the day.  Athens Banner-Herald
