Good morning, Athens. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 7th of June.

CRIME NEWS

  • Two Athens residents were arrested on felony animal cruelty charges after police seized a dead puppy and two starving dogs at an east Athens home — a necropsy confirmed the puppy died of starvation and the case will be presented to a Clarke County grand jury.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • After Jose Ibarra was convicted for killing Laken Riley during her morning jog on UGA campus, her mother Allyson Phillips renewed calls for improved student safety by urging full funding for the police department’s Real Time Crime Center — a promise made by Mayor Kelly Girtz.  FOX 5 Atlanta
  • Athens police arrested 30-year-old Alex Brown on May 29 after a search of his Jennings Mill Parkway apartment uncovered stolen checks, manufactured checks, stolen identification documents, mail and check-making supplies — he now faces 16 felony charges tied to a two-year investigation into mail theft and forgery.  Classic City News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • UGA experts report that the venomous Asian needle ant is expanding in the Southeast and may soon appear in Athens yards, where its sting poses health risks. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Georgia Public Service Commission will hold a primary election on June 17 to fill District 2 and District 3 seats, with early voting held from May 27 to June 13 at local sites such as the Athens-Clarke Board of Elections office and Athens Regional Library—if no candidate wins over 50% of the vote, a runoff is scheduled for July 15. PSC staff and Georgia Power tentatively agreed to freeze base rates for three years amid criticism over rising utility costs.  The Red & Black
  • A new Georgia law — the Protecting Georgia's Children on Social Media Act — will take effect on July 1 and require websites with material harmful to minors to use age verification. Some porn sites, including PornHub, have chosen to block Georgia users instead of adding the verification system and many residents may turn to VPNs to bypass the block.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • At Tuesday's Athens-Clarke County Mayor and Commission meeting, officials discussed the $25 million grant awarded to ACC in August 2022 to improve the North Avenue Corridor and warned that missing the September 30 deadline could lead to cancellation and repayment of funds. ACCGov is working to reclassify the grant as a planning grant—if successful, existing costs will not need to be repaid and a build grant could be applied for later.  WUGA
