- ➤ On May 21st, 18-year-old Donnell Jones was arrested at a McDonald’s on Atlanta Highway when police found him with a stolen gun reported in Athens—he was charged with theft by receiving stolen property—he is now held in county jail. Classic City News
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Interim Superintendent Jennifer Scott announced on June 3 that Donna Elder will serve as interim deputy superintendent of academics and student support for the 2025-26 school year, with her term starting on July 1. Elder has worked for the district since 2001 (serving in roles such as executive director of federal programs, principal, assistant principal and special education coordinator) and brings extensive experience to the role. - ➤ On Tuesday, June 3, the Athens-Clarke County Mayor and Commission met to discuss the FY26 budget, short term rental permit requests, and other agenda items. Public speakers criticized proposed budget cuts that they said would affect local services—while the commission rejected two STR permit requests and approved a property appeal. The Red & Black
- ➤ Athens-Clarke County officials appointed Judd Drake as the interim manager during a regular session meeting on Tuesday, June 3; he will begin his term on June 4 until a permanent manager is named. Drake, who has served as ACC attorney since 2019 (and previously worked as interim manager for Macon-Bibb), will return to his attorney role once a new manager is chosen and approved by Mayor Kelly Girtz. - ➤ USDA officials said Organic Rancher ground beef sold at Whole Foods may carry dangerous E. coli since the products were removed from shelves; customers with 1-pound vacuum-packed packages produced on May 22 and May 23 and with use-by dates June 19 & 20 should discard or return them as no illnesses have been reported.
