COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Bear Hollow Zoo euthanized DJ, a 22-year-old American black bear (their largest resident) last Friday morning after nearly 20 years in care due to worsening spinal osteoarthritis and cardiomyopathy. The zoo will conduct a necropsy (at UGA Veterinarian Teaching hospital) to collect samples for research.  The Red & Black

EDUCATION NEWS

  • University of Georgia President Jere W. Morehead announced that Benjamin Ayers, dean of the Terry College of Business, will become the new provost and senior vice president for academic affairs—replacing S. Jack Hu who is leaving to serve as chancellor at University of California Riverside effective July 15. Ayers, credited with expanding programs and enrollment at the college since 2014, will assume his new role on June 30.  The Red & Black

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Athens-Clarke County residents can share input on next year's budget in a series of Taxpayer Bill Rights meetings. The first meeting is today to review the FY2026 spending plan—set at $201.6 million and $2 million less than last year's—with additional sessions on June 5th and June 10th for commissioners to adopt the plan.  WUGA

  • The Georgia men's baseball team played an NCAA Athens Regional game against Oklahoma State at Foley Field on Sunday, June 1 and lost 9-11.  The Red & Black
  • The Georgia men’s baseball team played against Duke at Foley Field on Saturday, May 31st and lost 3—6.  The Red & Black
  • Athens-area readers are invited to pick the postseason boys soccer player of the year from nominees chosen by coaches after a season where no boys team won a title—voting will end Tuesday, June 10 at 5 p.m.  Athens Banner-Herald
