  • Forest Heights will host its annual Blueberry Festival at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, May 30, with a kids bike race, cook-off, and concert. The event supports the Blueberry Project + a neighborhood effort to boost resilience and address food insecurity through community blueberry planting.  WUGA

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The Georgia Department of Labor reported that Athens reached a record high in employment with nearly 600 new jobs in April and a 2.4 percent unemployment rate, while the labor force grew by almost 6,000 over the past year.  WUGA

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Meteorologists are monitoring unusually warm Gulf waters and tropical moisture that may affect Georgia’s weather as hurricane season begins on June 1 — potentially bringing heavy rain and gusty winds along the coast. Residents are advised to stay prepared.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • Georgia forestry officials released a report on May 28 showing moderate statewide activity for Southern Pine Beetles in 50 counties, with Carroll, Floyd, Polk, and Randolph Counties recording over 80 beetles per trap per day.   • This summer, copperhead snakes are getting active on warm nights in local forests and yards as they look for cool, hidden spots to rest and breed, according to UGA’s Savannah River Ecology Lab.   • Due to inclement weather, the Georgia Bulldogs are set to play Long Island at 5:06 p.m. today in the NCAA Athens Regional, while Boston College faces Liberty at 12:06 p.m.—gates open one hour ahead of each game.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • On May 17, Next Up Sports partnered with Piedmont Orthopedic and Sports Medicine and the Carlos Strong Foundation to honor local high school athletes and coaches for their achievements during the 2025-26 school year.
