  • The Friends of Athens-Clarke County Library will host Family Fun Day at the Athens-Clarke County Library on Saturday, May 31 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.—the free event features a Wildlife Critters Petting Zoo, puppet show performances, and activities from local businesses while also offering sign-ups for the Summer Reading program themed Color Your World.  Classic City News

  • Athens Wok, a popular Asian restaurant at 493 E Clayton St., closed its doors on May 25 due to a nearby hotel's expansion that led to financial hardship for the owner—who now plans to return to Thailand and is raising funds to cover relocation costs and missed future events like his son's graduation at UGA.  Athens Banner-Herald

CRIME NEWS

  • A 35-year-old emergency room nurse was arrested on May 17 after his partner called 911 at 5:30 a.m. to report that he pushed her down a flight of stairs during an argument at their home, and police later found hospital drugs in his pickup on Tallassee Road, charging him with DUI of multiple substances, possession of controlled and prescription drugs, and battery under the Georgia Family Violence Act.  Classic City News

HEALTH NEWS

  • A study from the University of Georgia found that rural counties lack PET scan facilities needed to diagnose Alzheimer’s disease and nearly no centers to deliver the drug Lecanemab—one of the few available treatments. More than 188,000 people with Alzheimer’s face long drives of over an hour for scans and more than three hours for treatment.  WUGA
