COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Athens Area Diaper Bank received $200,000 from Sen. Jon Ossoff and Rev. Raphael Warnock to purchase diapers and expand its warehouse space. The funding, approved in bipartisan legislation, will help serve more families in the community.  WUGA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Cine in Athens launches its Science on Screen series that pairs popular films with post-show expert talks. The program begins Saturday, May 30 at 234 W Hancock Ave (downtown Athens) and offers viewers films like 'Project Hail Mary' and 'Frankenstein' alongside engaging discussions.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • Photos showing the UGA campus from 1875 were shared on Instagram by UGAFollowers yesterday, highlighting a quiet, 1800s campus that has evolved into a vibrant hub with modern buildings (it was chartered in 1785).  Athens Banner-Herald
  • Pam Knox, director of the UGA Weather Network, will retire May 29 after more than 25 years at UGA. She advised residents to rely on accurate weather reports and plan ahead as Georgia's climate shows clear changes.  WUGA

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • UGA says the venomous Asian needle ant, which can cause painful stings + allergic reactions, has been spotted in local yards posing a threat to native ants. Homeowners should clear debris from their properties and report any sightings to their local UGA Extension office.  Athens Banner-Herald

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Public Utilities Department released the Drinking Water Quality Report on May 27, detailing over 100,000 water quality tests from 2025 that met state and federal standards. Customers can review a mailed summary, full report online, or pick up a copy at the Water Conservation Office on E. Hancock Ave.  Athens-Clarke County

HEALTH NEWS

  • Health inspectors released Athens restaurant scores from May 12-26, showing several eateries earned perfect marks while BB.Q Chicken and George’s Lowcountry Table scored low. Inspectors noted mold-like growth in BB.Q Chicken’s bulk ice machine and cold-holding issues at George’s Lowcountry Table (inspections detail ongoing concerns).  Athens Banner-Herald

SPORTS NEWS

  • Georgia football signed three-star defensive lineman Waylon Wooten yesterday after he recorded 61 tackles in two seasons and helped win a state title. He is the first defensive lineman and eighth commitment for the class of 2027, and the team will open its season on Sept. 5.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • Local baseball fans can look forward to the Georgia Regional starting Friday, May 29 in Athens where the Bulldogs will host LIU, Boston College, and Liberty — tickets are on sale for this double-elimination tournament that will lead to the College World Series.  Athens Banner-Herald
