CRIME NEWS

  • A married couple was indicted on burglary and theft charges for breaking into an AT&T building in Athens in August and September 2022 — Johnross and Denna Youngblood from Forsyth County were released on bail in October 2022 and will be arraigned on June 3.  Classic City News
  • Athens-Clarke County Police are asking for help to locate a dark-colored sedan that hit a pedestrian and killed a dog on Essex Court near Cedar Shoals Drive around 9 p.m. April 13—officials say the car has a damaged passenger side door.  Classic City News
  • Firefighters led a two-night stakeout at Southeast Clarke Park after arson damage was found on May 20, and officers arrested two suspects for second-degree arson when they returned on May 22 — the fire department said.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • Madelynn Peacock, a 23-year-old UGA student, was arrested on May 8 after she injured her girlfriend with a concrete flowerpot during a domestic dispute at a residence on Little Oconee Street in Athens—she was released on $1,500 bail with a Magistrate Court order banning contact with the victim and preventing her return to the home.  Classic City News

  • Classic City High School seniors celebrated graduation on May 21 in Athens as families and school officials marked the important milestone. The ceremony recognized graduates and highlighted their hard work.  Athens Banner-Herald

SPORTS NEWS

  • University of Georgia president Jere Morehead said the SEC schools will sign the House settlement enforcement rules to regulate college sports NIL deals—he noted the agreement was confirmed after a meeting on May 22 at the Ritz-Carlton Lodge and warned schools risk conference eviction if they do not comply. Morehead stressed that all SEC presidents have agreed to honor the settlement.  Athens Banner-Herald
