CRIME NEWS

  • A man was found dead early Wednesday morning in the parking lot at Simpson Chiropractic Center on Hawthorne Avenue inside the back of an SUV — the police are investigating his death and an autopsy is pending at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s crime laboratory.  Classic City News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Housing and Community Development Department announced it will host the CNC Athens nonprofit training series to help local groups improve board governance, strategic planning, and program management. The free six-part series will run monthly from June through November and requires registration for each session (limited to 25 participants).  Athens-Clarke County
  • All ACC Gov Leisure Services pools will open Saturday, May 24 with Memorial Day hours from 1:00 to 5:30 p.m. and will run through Sunday, July 27 — admission is $1 per person for all public pools and splash pads.  Athens-Clarke County

SPORTS NEWS

  • Slate Alford gave up fast food (losing 25 pounds) and reshaped his game for the Georgia Bulldogs during his breakout season.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • Georgia baseball ended its SEC Tournament run after one game on May 21 in Hoover, Ala with a 42—15 record after a 3—2 loss to Oklahoma. Bracket projections from Baseball America, D1 Baseball and other outlets show the Bulldogs will be a top national seed and host an Athens regional in the NCAA Tournament.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • On May 21, Georgia baseball faced Oklahoma in the SEC Tournament in Hoover — the game started at 5:30 p.m. ET after a delay and was shown on SEC Network and its streaming service; Coach Wes Johnson said the team, managing injuries and lineup changes, remains focused as it prepares for a contest against Vanderbilt later today.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • The SEC baseball tournament held four second-round games on Wednesday in Hoover, Alabama, with Mississippi State, Tennessee, Georgia and Ole Miss playing on the SEC Network, while rain delayed Auburn’s matchup to today at 11:00 a.m. CT. Rain pushed one game into today + teams will later compete for an NCAA berth + the bracket continues to shape who advances.  Athens Banner-Herald
