ECONOMY NEWS

  • World Population Review released 2025 property tax data that lists the five counties with the lowest and highest rates — Wheeler County leads the low end at $562 while Fulton County tops the high range at $3,847. Athens ranks 144th, with Clarke County homeowners paying a median of $2,444.  Athens Banner-Herald

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Georgia named Stacy Jones as its new vice president for public service and outreach after a national search — she has worked at UGA for over 12 years and will support programs that connect the university’s resources with counties across the state.  WUGA
  • The Clarke County School District announced the 2025 valedictorians and salutatorians for Cedar Shoals, Clarke Central and Classic City high schools — the awards honor students with the highest and next highest grade-point averages who also excelled in academics, sports, journalism and the arts. Several awardees will begin college this fall at schools such as Yale, Harvard and Tufts.  Classic City News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Athens-Clarke County may lose a $25 million federal grant for North Avenue because design updates have made it impossible to meet the grant’s deadline. Officials are now weighing options—either cancel the grant, switch it to a planning grant, or revert to a four-lane design that avoids extra land issues.  Flagpole
  • The Athens-Clarke County Solid Waste Department will suspend compost, garbage, recycling and leaf collections on Monday, May 26 for residential and commercial customers outside downtown—pickups will shift one day later and resume on Monday, June 2. Customers in the downtown district will have service on the regular schedule and must have their carts out by 7:00 a.m. on their pick-up day.  Athens-Clarke County

SPORTS NEWS

  • Georgia and Florida will each receive 7.5 million dollars from AMB Sports and Entertainment for their 2026 rivalry game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. Jacksonville will pay each school 3 million dollars for the 2026 and 2027 seasons while renovations occur, and games returning to Jacksonville from 2028 will raise payouts from 10 million to 10.5 million dollars per school.  Athens Banner-Herald
