- ➤ At approximately 2:18 a.m. today, firefighters responded to a heavy residential fire at 203 Briarcliff Road in west Athens where flames and a floor collapse prevented a full search and a body was found nearly three hours later — authorities are investigating the cause. Classic City News

- ➤ Clarke County Schools approved a tentative $255M budget for FY 2026 that sets aside $1.1M for 17 new school resource officers, salary step increases and higher employee health insurance costs. The district’s millage rate holds at 18.8 while property tax collections are expected to rise 6% in 2025 + the school board will hold public hearings starting June 2 at the Vernon Payne Meeting Hall.
