ECONOMY NEWS

  • A Lending Tree report shows that national gas prices surged in April to an average of $4.10 per gallon — the sixth-highest month on record. Local prices remain near $4, so Athens drivers may find fuel more affordable compared to other regions.  FOX 5 Atlanta

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Clarke County Board of Education named interim Superintendent Dr. Jennifer Scott as the sole finalist to permanently lead the school district during its May meeting. The board will vote on her appointment after a required 14-day waiting period.  WUGA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Brian Kemp re-suspended the motor fuel excise tax — giving drivers a 33-cent per gallon discount — to ease fuel costs for Memorial Day travel, with the measure starting at midnight on Wednesday and running until 11:59 p.m. on June 2.  Athens Banner-Herald

HEALTH NEWS

  • St. Mary’s Health Care System will expand its Baxter Street campus with a $35 million Center for Heart Vascular and Neurosciences that spans 15,000 sqft and features the region's first 4D CT scanner; a groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled mid-June to boost heart health and cancer care.  WUGA

  • Georgia softball came from behind on Friday night when a five-run inning gave the Dawgs a 5-2 win over College of Charleston in the NCAA Regional, with key hits and back-to-back home runs energizing the crowd.
