  • Maddy Murray, a UGA veterinary medicine student, received a competitive scholarship from Aurora Pharmaceutical as part of the fifth annual DVM Student Scholarship Program that awarded $90,000 to 28 top third-year veterinary students across the U.S.—the award honors academic success and community involvement in veterinary medicine.  The Red & Black

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A 3.5-magnitude earthquake hit south of Knoxville on Saturday morning and was felt in Athens and other parts of north Georgia, the National Weather Service reported. Meteorologists said the near-epicenter area had suffered hurricanes, floods, and wildfires in recent months—adding to the region’s history of natural events.  Athens Banner-Herald

HEALTH NEWS

  • Scientists from UGA and Texas A&M are working on new tests and treatments for Chagas disease—which is spread by kissing bugs and can cause severe heart problems—in order to protect both dogs and people. They are using dogs as a model for human infection with nearly $4 million in funding from NIH, DHS, and the American Kennel Club.  WUGA

  • A new report by Garden and Gun names Dicks Creek Gap as the best place to start day hikes on the Appalachian Trail in Georgia. Mike McCollum of the Georgia Appalachian Trail Club said the site offers quiet trails and wildlife sightings—hikers can choose a 4-mile loop or an 11-mile trek before stopping in nearby towns for craft brews and good eats.  Athens Banner-Herald
