CRIME NEWS

  • On April 29th near East Paces Drive, a man in Athens was forced at gunpoint to strip naked and beaten by two suspects who stole his phone and pistol — the suspects fled but were later arrested and charged with aggravated assault and armed robbery.  Classic City News
  • Deputies in Oconee County investigated several incidents in late April, including shoplifting at Walmart and Dick’s Sporting Goods, a hit-and-run on Highway 316, a DUI on Mars Hill Road, and a high-speed chase in Athens that ended with the arrest of a 22-year-old Winder man carrying a loaded machine gun, a 60-round magazine and concealed marijuana — while a Watkinsville woman reported receiving fraud calls from a man claiming to be a sheriff’s captain.  Athens Banner-Herald

  • On May 7, Georgia baseball coach Wes Johnson said he will stay with Georgia and not pursue the Mississippi State job—he said he loves the team. His contract offers a $2 million buyout after this season that will decrease in later years and includes annual pay raises.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • UGA pitcher Kolten Smith is donating $10 for every strikeout he throws this season to raise funds for Lyme disease research, a cause personal to him since his mother Bonnie has battled the illness for years.
