CULTURE NEWS

  • The Vic Chesnutt 2025 Songwriter of the Year Awards were held on May 1 at the 40 Watt Club in Athens. The event honored local singer-songwriter Vic Chesnutt+ by recognizing songwriters from the Athens area.  The Red & Black

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Athens-Clarke County Board of Elections has moved the Precinct 7A polling site to the ACC Library at 2025 Baxter Street for the June 17 special primary and July runoff, replacing Timothy Baptist Church on 380 Timothy Road+ all affected voters will get new precinct cards. The board will take public input at its May 13 meeting at 4:30 p.m.+ it will later decide if the change becomes permanent.  Athens-Clarke County
  • Social Security retirement checks will be mailed on May 14 for birthdays on the 1-10, May 21 for birthdays on the 11-20, and May 28 for birthdays on the 21-31 while SSI recipients received a check on May 1 and will get a check for June on May 30. The SSA website lists more than 30 offices across Georgia, including Athens, where beneficiaries can get assistance.  Athens Banner-Herald

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Clarke Middle Health Center held its ribbon cutting on May 1 at a new permanent location inside the middle school building where dozens of medical staff, students and community members toured the facility—this center, an extension of Athens Free Clinic under the AU/UGA Medical Partnership, has provided over $400,000 in free care and offers ongoing services, including counseling and legal help, to local families.  The Red & Black

SPORTS NEWS

  • Earnest Greene is returning as a starter for Georgia football this season and switched from left tackle to right tackle during spring practice—he hopes to improve his play after battling a shoulder injury last season.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • Georgia softball lost key players and dropped from a top SEC team to rank 13th after falling out of the NFCA poll, relying on promising freshmen and sophomores for a rebuild. The team will play in the SEC Tournament starting Tuesday at Jack Turner Stadium—its first time hosting in nearly two decades—with the NCAA selection show scheduled for May 11.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • UGA will host the SEC Softball Tournament from May 6 to May 10 and the event is expected to increase local traffic. AHN will add extra staff—an effort to better manage visitor delays—during the tournament.  Athens-Clarke County
