COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Athens-Clarke County unveiled plans today for a Center for Racial Justice and Black Futures at The Classic Center campus. The project—rooted in Linnentown history—will focus on Black history, youth leadership and racial justice and is set to open late 2026.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • Avery is featured as pet of the day to promote adoption in the community. The announcement posted April 28 at 11:13 a.m. encourages Athens residents to learn more at (furkids.org).  FOX 5 Atlanta
  • A groundbreaking ceremony for the Athens-Clarke County Center for Racial Justice and Black Futures was held at the Classic Center on April 23 — the center will open later this year to support community dialogue on racial justice.  Athens Banner-Herald

CULTURE NEWS

  • Athens Comedy Fest runs May 1—2 at the historic Morton Theatre and kicks off on Apr. 30 at Live Wire; the event features over 20 national touring comedians and local talent selected from a competitive submission process, with tickets from $25 to $65.  Flagpole
  • Canopy Studios launched its Imagine More campaign earlier this year to raise $450,000 for a new space on Ware Street. The expansion will let the nonprofit serve over 90 weekly classes and host May community shows + boost its outreach.  Flagpole
  • Wuxtry Records is celebrating 50 years with an anniversary show at 40 Watt Club on Saturday, May 2—featuring local acts like Reverend Conner Tribble, The Asymptomatics and Organically Programmed—with doors opening at 7 p.m., tickets costing $10 and part of the proceeds benefiting the Broad River Watershed Association.  Flagpole

EDUCATION NEWS

  • South College students are hosting a career fair focused on healthcare hiring — connecting local employers with students in a strong job market as unemployment remains steady.  FOX 5 Atlanta
  • University of Georgia held its annual candlelight memorial ceremony Tuesday, April 28 at the UGA Chapel in Athens. The service honored 27 students, faculty and staff members who died since April 2025 (photo by Caroline Newbern).  The Red & Black

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Georgia declared a statewide Drought Response Level 1 on April 27 to guide public water systems in maintaining watering protocols amid severe drought and wildfires. Public information campaigns (online ads and bill inserts) reminded residents to conserve water, and officials noted (if conditions worsen) that restrictions might soon follow.  Athens Banner-Herald

SPORTS NEWS

  • Georgia gymnastics coach Cecile Canqueteau-Landi will earn $375,000 a year starting May 1 after leading the team to the national semifinals and being named sole head coach. Her $35,000 raise follows her second season with the program.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • The Georgia Bulldogs defeated the Troy Trojans 11-1 on Tuesday, Apr. 28 at Foley Field in Athens & the win featured strong pitching and timely hitting.  The Red & Black
  • Jeff Dantzler, known for calling Bulldog baseball and women’s basketball, will call Georgia football play-by-play starting Sept. 5 as part of a radio broadcast revamp replacing Scott Howard. He will also join Smart’s weekly radio show while continuing his long career in Georgia sports.  Athens Banner-Herald
