  • On April 25, community members gathered at Stegeman Coliseum for the first MobilePack session to help Feed My Starving Children pack food for starving children abroad — five sessions will pack over 185,000 meals, and host Tom Spencer said he will expand the effort next year.  The Red & Black

CRIME NEWS

  • Oconee County police said Lois Dua, 53-year-old of Bogart, was charged with vehicular homicide and failure to yield after her car struck two pedestrians crossing Gaines School Road in east Athens Friday night at about 8:40 p.m.—one pedestrian died and the other was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.  Classic City News

  • Malayalees of UGA and Tamil Sangam hosted their first joint formal on April 25 in Athens—students enjoyed games, awards, food, singing and dancing at the event.  The Red & Black

SPORTS NEWS

  • Dominic Lovett was drafted by the Detroit Lions in the seventh round of the NFL Draft as the 244th overall pick and is expected to bring his speed and toughness to special teams—he was a key receiver for Georgia with strong receiving numbers in his final college season.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • Arian Smith, a Georgia football wide receiver, was picked in the fourth round of the NFL Draft by the New York Jets — he was chosen with the 110th overall pick and shows rare speed as he enters his rookie season while working to improve his route running. His college record includes 68 receptions for 1,356 yards and 10 touchdowns.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • Trevor Etienne from Georgia football was picked by the Carolina Panthers in the fourth round of the NFL Draft—the 114th overall selection. The running back is known for his quick moves and scoring in college and will bring energy to his new team.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • Georgia football finished its NFL Draft campaign Saturday when thirteen Bulldogs were selected — now, other players from the team will sign undrafted free agent deals as they try to make an NFL roster. Updates on these signings will follow as teams complete their roster selections.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • Dan Jackson, a safety from Georgia football, was picked by the Detroit Lions in the seventh round of the NFL Draft and is now an NFL rookie — he played six years with 19 starts and over 140 tackles at Georgia, and he is expected to add depth on special teams.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • The Philadelphia Eagles selected Georgia linebacker Smael Mondon in the NFL draft's fifth round with the 161st overall pick, and he officially became an NFL rookie. Mondon, who recorded 213 tackles during his time at Georgia, will take his next steps with the team as long as his foot injury clears upcoming medical checkups — his performance in pro games will be closely watched.  Athens Banner-Herald
