  • Project Safe thrift store on Hawthorne Avenue aids domestic abuse survivors by accepting donated items and offering affordable goods. Athens Habitat ReStore sorts donations to support building projects and promotes recycling + reuse among local residents.  Flagpole

  • La Tavola is bringing back its annual Mezzogiorno menu that celebrates the bright flavors of Italy's coast & spring. The menu will be available until April 26.  FOX 5 Atlanta

CULTURE NEWS

  • Kitty House Art Collective transforms discarded materials into art — hosting events and operating a workshop at Chase Street Warehouse. It currently features an installation at Creature Comforts taproom downtown and will design décor for Superstar’s album release party in May and host a fashion show at Motherlode in August.  Flagpole
  • Retiree Lesley Platek launched Classic City Rewind, a weekly podcast that archives Athens history through interviews with local figures; she now records season two episodes at Runway Cowork (Beechwood shopping center) to reconnect the community with its past.  Athens Banner-Herald

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Clarke County School District will hold a surplus sale from April 30 to May 2 at the Early Learning Center East at 280 Gaines School Road. Employees shop April 30 & May 1 from 2-6 p.m. while the public shops May 2 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.  Classic City News
  • UGA’s School of Medicine offered admission to 64 prospective students from over 2,000 applicants as it formed its inaugural class. The selection process began days after the school received preliminary accreditation in February.  WUGA

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • As spring arrives, roach sightings in Athens may increase and experts advise residents to use eco-friendly integrated pest management to control moisture, seal entry points, and clean up food spills — recommendations from UGA’s program.  Athens Banner-Herald

  • Georgia football has produced 55 NFL Draft picks in five years. The NFL Draft begins today at 8 p.m. and runs through Saturday & experts say the Bulldogs’ talent is set to shine at the next level.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • Athens Rock Lobsters will host a free Player Farewell Tour at Akins Ford Arena today from 6 to 8 p.m. Fans can meet players+ receive autographs+ bid on player-used items during the event following the team's playoff exit.  WUGA
