  • Creature Comforts Brewing Company of Athens ranked 31st among craft breweries and 42nd overall on a top 50 list — making it the only Georgia brewer on either ranking. Founded in 2014, the company also operates a taproom in Los Angeles.  WUGA

CRIME NEWS

  • On April 16, Athens-Clarke County Police responded to a call at the Wyndham Hotel on North Ave where a man with false ID surrendered a small bag of marijuana and over $1000 in cash—earlier that day a man was arrested on West Broad Street for DUI after a car accident, while on April 13, officers arrested a woman on East Clayton Street for DUI after she hit a car and failed a sobriety test.  The Red & Black
  • A 39-year-old inmate died after staff found him unresponsive in his cell during routine checks at Athens-Clarke County Jail on April 22—a EMS transport and resuscitation efforts failed before he was pronounced dead shortly before 10 a.m.  FOX 5 Atlanta
  • A 22-year-old UGA student, Noah Fears, was arrested for DUI after crashing his Acura TLX near downtown Athens on April 18 at about 1:53 a.m.—the car hit curbs after a broken front axle and he continued driving despite showing signs of intoxication after a fraternity event with two bourbon or whiskey drinks, failing roadside sobriety tests before posting a $1,500 bond.  Classic City News

  • Disney On Ice will host a Frozen and Encanto story reading at Athens-Clarke County Library on Thursday, April 24 from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. A Disney performer will lead the session — with a special guest appearance to bring the magic to young readers.  Classic City News
  • Tomorrow the Athens-Clarke County Library branch at 2025 Baxter Street will host Disney On Ice presents Frozen and Encanto from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and a performer will lead an immersive storytelling session—bringing magical ice skating effects and familiar Disney characters—designed to spark young imaginations.  Classic City News
  • HAUTE Creatives Collective hosted its third annual spring fashion show on April 21 in Athens & the event featured clothes made by student designers and stylists and modeled by students.  The Red & Black

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Athens-Clarke County government is asking residents for input on nearly 60 proposed projects—ranging from bike lane safety improvements to installing fiber optic connectivity— ahead of a 2026 vote on using sales tax dollars for public transportation; responses will be collected online until the end of May.  WUGA
  • Athens First UMC rejected a $3 million preservation offer to save the historic Saye Building and planned to demolish it for parking after a 7 to 3 county commission vote on April 1—removing it from the West Downtown Historic District. The Planning Commission unanimously denied a special use permit for creating 14 parking spaces—leaving the building’s future to be reviewed on May 6 as mediation continues.  The Red & Black

  • Athens-area high school baseball teams advanced to the GHSA state playoffs, and their first-round doubleheaders begin today with matchups including a 3 p.m. game for Winder-Barrow vs Coffee, a 4:30 p.m. contest when Apalachee plays at Houston County, and another 4:30 p.m. game featuring North Oconee vs Locust Grove — additional rounds and championship games are scheduled through May with times to be updated.  Athens Banner-Herald
