  • Fur Kids featured its pet of the day, Canelo, for adoption yesterday, inviting Athens pet lovers to find a new furry friend (more details are available on Furkids.org).  FOX 5 Atlanta
  • Athens skate park is celebrating its 21st birthday with contests, live music (starting at 1 p.m.), food trucks and an artist market on Saturday, Apr. 25 at the skate park. Family-friendly contests include kids skating and a silent auction with signups at noon and results at 5 p.m.  Flagpole

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Athens business owner Andrew Clinkscale will head to Nashville to compete in The UPS Store Challenge for a chance to win $25,000 for his business, a press release said. The competition is expected to take place later this week.  FOX 5 Atlanta
  • Mellow Mushroom in downtown Athens is testing eight new sandwiches and wraps until July 7 to gather customer feedback, and the chain will feature options at its current location (320 E.   • Former Athens Poet Laureate Mikhayla Smith released her new spoken word and music album on Valentine’s Day. The album explores Black love as a cultural force and features production by Grammy Award winner Luke Campolieta (with music by Atlanta musician Benny St. Peixe).  Athens Banner-Herald
  • View Finders, the Emmy-nominated photography show, will hold a Ciné fundraiser event on Saturday, Apr. 25 at 5:30 p.m. at Ciné where host Chris Greer & photographer Paul Daniel join GPB President Bert Wesley Huffman for a conversation, sneak peak screening, open bar, photo ops and red carpet reception.  Flagpole

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Three open seats on the Clarke County School Board feature two candidates each; the nonpartisan May 19 election will yield final winners (there is no November vote). Local candidates promise to improve classroom support and literacy while drawing on their experience in education and community involvement.  Flagpole
  • UGA officials said the Chapel Bell will ring through Sunday, May 10 plus it will be removed on Monday, May 11 for preservation, with plans to reinstall it for the fall semester at North Campus.  Athens Banner-Herald

  • Georgia gymnastics announced Tuesday that co-head coach Ryan Roberts is leaving to join Auburn’s program — leaving Cécile Canqueteau-Landi as GymDogs’ sole coach after a 30-22-1 record over two seasons.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • A record number of athletes from local high schools signed to play college sports today at NCAA Division I and II schools, including commitments from Jefferson and Athens Academy, with the final signings completed at 4:03 a.m. ET.  Athens Banner-Herald
