  • Last week, Athens hosted events as UGA baseball played at Foley Field and Truist Park, campus groups held a Hands off Our Students protest over revoked international student visas, and the UGA theater department offered an ASL-interpreted production of Murder on the Orient Express. EDUCATION NEWS

  • During Thursday’s board meeting, the Clarke County Board of Education approved three new administrative positions. Sabrina Lumpkin was named principal of Barnett Shoals Elementary effective July 1 (replacing Dr. Aliceson Nobles), while Bylan Swift and Dan Swartz assumed their roles immediately.  WUGA
  • The Clarke County School District’s Department of Special Education is hosting a Transition Fair on April 25 from 9 a.m. to noon at its administrative offices at 595 Prince Ave (students and families from Clarke and Madison counties may attend) with more than 30 local resource providers offering details on community access, job support, financial aid, and waiver programs (including the New Option and Comprehensive Support Waivers).  Classic City News
  • At 5:45 a.m. on Jan. 24, students in Building 1516 at the University of Georgia were evacuated after a pipe burst caused flooding on several floors. University Housing said they are investigating the cause—no structural problems have been found—and they are assessing repairs while some students have already returned and others remain displaced.  The Red & Black

  • Today, the Athens—area girls soccer teams start state playoff games in GHSA Class 5A at 5:30 p.m. while boys teams play on April 23; nearly all local schools, except Commerce and Oglethorpe County, earned bids for both sports and later rounds will be held in May—at several venues.  Athens Banner-Herald
