  • Athens Skate Park celebrated its 20th anniversary on April 19—contests, vendor markets and music marked the event for local skaters.  The Red & Black

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Kroger announced that the new store on College Station Road will open at 8 a.m. on April 30 while the old store (2301 College Station Rd.) will close at 6 p.m. on April 29 and then be demolished to build a fuel center and retail space.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • Creature Comforts Brewing Co. in Athens is the only Georgia brewery to be listed in both the top 50 craft and overall brewing companies rankings, placed 31st (craft) and 42nd (overall). Founded in 2014, the brewery runs a taproom in Los Angeles and will release a north German-style pilsner on May 2.  Athens Banner-Herald

CRIME NEWS

  • On April 3, police watched the Bulldog Inn on Commerce Road and arrested Octavius Sarden after he left a motel room with a suspicious backpack and got in a car later found to hide drugs—such as crystal meth, fentanyl, and morphine.  Classic City News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Tickets for the 2025 SEC softball championship in Athens will be available on the Georgia Athletics website, with all session tickets sold out and single session tickets offered during tournament week—when the 15-game event runs from Tuesday, May 6 to Saturday, May 10 at Jack Turner Stadium. Seeding will be set on May 4 after the season ends.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • Five-star offensive line prospect Jackson Cantwell said he will decide on April 30 because he believes Georgia football can best help him reach the NFL. He has visited Athens many times and praised coach Kirby Smart for the program’s strong track record—he values the chance to develop into a professional player.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • Georgia football added three transfers from the portal on Sunday - Army pass rusher Elo Modozie, Illinois running back Josh McCray and Miami defensive lineman Joshua Horton joined the Bulldogs roster ahead of the new season.  Athens Banner-Herald
