COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Athens-Clarke County Leisure Services Department announced that Athens' only public skate park at Southeast Clarke Park is turning 20 on Saturday, April 19 from noon to 8:00 p.m.—the celebration will feature live music, food trucks, and an artist—vendor market.  Classic City News

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Police said a 16-year-old boy accidentally shot himself while cleaning a rifle at University Oaks apartments on April 8th, leaving him with wounds to his lower abdomen and right bicep—he was transported by ambulance to the hospital.  Classic City News

CRIME NEWS

  • Athens-Clarke County Police said that on April 9 a woman found her husband's decomposed body in their basement after a mountain bike fell down the stairs, and an autopsy has been ordered to determine his cause of death—she has not been charged.  The Red & Black

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Regents voted Tuesday to keep in-state tuition and fees largely flat at Georgia public universities and colleges for the 2025-2026 academic year — most students will pay about $6,466 for two semesters even as costs at six schools rise and fall at two others. Students from outside the state will see a 2% increase and international students a 3% increase in tuition.  WUGA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Georgia Department of Driver Services has reminded drivers to check that their licenses display a black or gold star as a Real ID marker because without it, travelers will not be allowed through TSA checkpoints or into federal facilities after May 7. Drivers needing a Real ID must bring original documents showing their identity—Social Security number and Georgia residency—to a Customer Service Center.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • On April 15, the Athens-Clarke County Mayor and Commission discussed planning commission recommendations, revisions to the School Resource Officer Agreement and proposals to reestablish the Land Bank Authority for affordable housing. Several agenda items — including a rezoning request and public comments on traffic issues — were moved to the consent agenda with final votes scheduled for May 6.  The Red & Black

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Georgia Square Value Cinemas, a popular budget movie theater in Athens that closed in 2015, was demolished to clear space for new commercial and residential uses. The mall redevelopment plan—approved two years ago—will add 70,000 square feet of retail space and 1,200 new housing units.  Athens Banner-Herald

SPORTS NEWS

  • Georgia running back Branson Robinson entered the transfer portal after three seasons with the Bulldogs. The redshirt junior, who rushed for 330 yards and three touchdowns as a freshman, was hampered by injuries in recent seasons—prompting the team to look for additional support at the position.  Athens Banner-Herald
