Good morning, Athens. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 12th of April.
COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ The Athens YMCA launched a $9.3 million capital campaign to mark its 168th anniversary and renovate its facility — including a new youth wing with a computer room and improved spaces for seniors, individuals with special needs, and children. The campaign has raised nearly half its goal so far and will reach full funding by December 2027 — coinciding with its 170th anniversary as one of the oldest YMCAs in the country. WUGA
- ➤ Over 30 protestors gathered in front of Piedmont Athens Regional Hospital on Friday to demand a contract for maintenance workers who unionized last summer. Organizers said slow contract negotiations have hurt working conditions — the union has also filed seven labor law violation complaints with the federal government. WUGA
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Police located an 18-year-old sleepwalking student on Friday morning after roommates reported her missing; she left The Mark student apartments around 4:30 a.m. and was tracked through downtown by video footage—she was found at Jittery Joe’s on East Broad Street 16 minutes later—while still sleepwalking. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ On April 10, UGA notified its leaders about visa cancellations by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security that affected a few international students. The university is offering help through its Office of Global Engagement, International Student Life and its Office of Student Care and Outreach — students are advised to contact these offices for support. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Mayor Kelly Girtz gave his 2025 State of the Community Address on April 10 and outlined plans to improve housing, road safety, and youth programs in Athens. He said the city will invest over $16 million to redesign dangerous intersections (including Prince Avenue, Newton Bridge Road, Vincent Drive, North Avenue and Lexington Road) and add a new fire station and mobile medical center. - ➤ The Georgia Department of Natural Resources reminds residents and visitors that a basic fishing license is required for most freshwater fishing this summer while saltwater anglers need a free permit and mountain trout fishers require an extra trout license. Licenses cost $15 for residents and $50 for non-residents (or $10 for a one-day license) and will expire 365 days after purchase. Athens Banner-Herald
- ➤ In February, the Athens-Clarke County Mayor and Commission put off a plan from the Athens Anti-Discrimination Movement to fix gaps for Black communities for 60 days so they could work on writing a law. At the April 1 meeting — where nearly 20 Athenians spoke out — the commission approved the plan with an 8-2 vote. The Red & Black
- ➤ The historic Saye Building has been the focus of debate as Athens First United Methodist Church planned to tear it down to make a parking lot—after community and government meetings, the ACC Planning Commission denied the demolition on April 3, citing conflicts with the 2023 Comprehensive Plan and local design guidelines. This decision marks another chapter in the building’s long history since it was constructed in 1921. The Red & Black
