BUSINESS NEWS

  • Target will host its annual car seat trade-in event from April 19 to May 2, offering customers a 20% Target Circle bonus when recycling car seats at local stores. The bonus, redeemable on new car seats, car seat bases, and select baby gear, is available for use twice.  Athens Banner-Herald

CRIME NEWS

  • Athens-Clarke County police concluded that the death of an 86-year-old resident at Manor Lake last Sunday was not due to negligence & no charges will be filed as facility staff handle internal matters.  Classic City News

CULTURE NEWS

  • The 1947 film, likely shot by Chamber of Commerce director Joel A. Weir, captures post-WWII life in Athens with downtown views, campus scenes, local businesses, and contrasts between Milledge Avenue and Linnentown. The film is archived by the Walter J. Brown Media Archives as a rare glimpse into the community's past.  Classic City News
  • Athens chef Jennifer Lee Jackson, who grew up locally and worked at Farm 255 and The National, now competes on Top Chef season 23. The cooking competition airs Mondays at 9:30 p.m. with new episodes available on Peacock the following day.  Athens Banner-Herald

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Piedmont Athens Regional Auxiliary is accepting applications for its 2026 scholarship program to support students in healthcare careers. Eligible applicants must be enrolled or accepted at a Georgia college, have a 3.0 GPA, and reside in the designated 17-county area (applications are due by May 30).  WUGA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Tuesday, April 7, AADM hosted an Affordable Housing Rally at City Hall to call attention to local housing challenges — the event was followed by the April Mayor and Commission meeting where citizens shared their views.  The Red & Black
  • Georgia DHS will host a community conversation on developing the next State Plan on Aging at 3700 Atlanta Highway on May 13 in Athens. Elderly adults, caregivers, and service providers can join or provide feedback online.  WUGA
  • For individual income tax returns, Georgians must file by Wednesday, April 15—with owed taxes due then even if an extension is requested until Oct. 15; officials advise waiting 2 to 3 weeks after filing to check refund status online at the Georgia Tax Center.  Athens Banner-Herald

  • Coach Kirby Smart said today that returning starters are facing strong competition in spring practice + redshirt freshmen earn reps to boost their play for games starting on Sept. 5.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • The SEC Media Days schedule is announced for the four-day July event in Tampa, Fla where Kirby Smart will speak on Tuesday plus Auburn’s Alex Golesh, South Carolina’s Shane Beamer, and Vanderbilt’s Clark Lea will join him at the Marriott Water Street and JW Marriott.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • Georgia basketball coach Mike White led the Bulldogs to a season with 22 wins and two NCAA Tournament trips, but he remains one of the nation's lowest-paid coaches (earning $3.91 million) while his contract extends through 2030 to 2031 with his salary set to rise to $4.01 million next season.  Athens Banner-Herald
