COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The ACCGov Housing & Community Development Department is hosting three events for National Fair Housing Month and National Community Development Week to give Athens residents key insights on tenant rights, fair housing laws and community development. The Tenant’s Rights Forum will be on April 10 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Dougherty Street government building auditorium, with a lunch and learn on April 23 and a resource fair on April 26 at the ACC Library—these events follow updated tenant rights laws that went into effect on July 1, 2024.  WUGA

CRIME NEWS

  • On April 4th, officers surrounded a Macon Highway apartment after a man who had pointed a gun at two people fired one shot and later surrendered to face charges including aggravated assault—authorities also charged a Florida resident with making threatening calls over a body camera video and reported that on March 28th a man was hit on the head with a handgun and hand axe and robbed of $80 at the Amoco gas station on North Avenue.  The Red & Black
  • A 21-year-old UGA student was robbed at gunpoint near Target on East Broad Street early Sunday before 3 a.m. when two suspects—one coming from an alley who pressed a gun to his back—forced him to send $25 via Apple Pay before he fled, according to the Athens-Clarke County Police Department.  Classic City News
  • Athens woman Victoria Floyd crashed her Ford Crown Victoria on U.S. Highway 29 North—traveling at 100 mph as the speedometer remained stuck—into the rear of a van entering from Harve Mathis Road on April 1, disabling both vehicles, sending the van driver to a hospital while Floyd was arrested for driving under the influence and reckless driving.  Classic City News

  • The Clarke County School District selected Dr. Ilka McConnell as the inaugural Chair of the Career, Technical and Agricultural Education District Advisory Council to guide career pathways for students. She currently serves as Director of Economic Development for Invest Athens—her appointment is expected to strengthen ties between education, business and community.  WUGA

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On Friday, Sandy Creek Nature Center held its annual prescribed prairie burn with help from the ACC Sustainability Department and the Athens-Clarke County Fire Department. The controlled burn aims to manage native grasslands—reduce invasive species—and boost new growth in the local ecosystem.  Classic City News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • In the 1960s, Athens witnessed urban renewal displace Black families from historic Linnentown—22 acres were seized under eminent domain to build student housing. A resolution by the Athens-Clarke County Government calls for a Wall of Recognition and reparations, while descendant Hattie Thomas Whitehead has used her memoir and musical—Linnentown, the Musical—to urge deeper understanding of past policies.  The Red & Black

SPORTS NEWS

  • Georgia football lost in the playoff quarterfinals to Notre Dame and now has a young, overhauled roster with only two players from the 2021 national championship team—no starters from the 2022 team remain. Coach Kirby Smart said the team will start fresh during spring practice and look to build a new championship run as they prepare for Saturday’s G-Day spring game.  Athens Banner-Herald
