- ➤ The Salvation Army of Athens reopened its Center of Hope emergency shelter on March 31 after about two months of renovations that updated plumbing, electrical systems, HVAC, and more—funded by a $550,000 ARPA grant from Athens-Clarke County. - ➤ 44-year-old Carlos Lewis Merritt was arrested Saturday night in Athens after a two-hour standoff at his home on Macon Highway following a gun threat and a shot fired through his door—he surrendered at 11:25 p.m. with food and his phone in hand—and now faces charges including counts of aggravated assault on officers. - ➤ Athens police arrested 44-year-old convicted felon Carlos Lewis Merritt on Saturday night after a two-hour standoff during which he fired a gun through his apartment door—endangering seven officers—and surrendered holding food in one hand and a cellphone in the other. Athens Banner-Herald
- ➤ On March 26, Senior Police Officer Joshua Santos was on motorcycle patrol near Rocksprings Homes apartments—where reports said up to 100 people were involved in fighting—and he used pepper spray on a smaller group when the brawl resumed before calling EMS after some went to the hospital.
