- ➤ More than 25 major chains will be closed on April 20 while about 10 retailers—including Kroger, Trader Joe's, Walmart, and Whole Foods—will open for Easter shoppers in Athens. This schedule change will affect those seeking last-minute eggs and candy for the holiday. Athens Banner-Herald
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Athens-Clarke police charged 38-year-old Demetrius Antwon Lumpkin for fraudulently buying nearly $9,000 in diesel fuel from two gas stations on U.S. Highway 29 using a stolen FedEx fuel card over several months (he faces eight counts of felony financial card fraud and two counts of identification theft and remains in custody since his March 28 arrest) while police have not yet said what happened to the fuel. - ➤ The Athens job market expanded in February—boasting over 100,000 jobs and an increase of more than 2,000 since last year. The local unemployment rate was 3.4% while initial unemployment claims fell by nearly 80 from January. WUGA

- ➤ Students at UGA struggled to access SNAP benefits because many could not meet the 20-hour work requirement and found the application process confusing—factors that left 59% of eligible students without aid—and local food pantries reported rising food insecurity. The Red & Black
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Athens-Clarke County Government reached out to seek public input on its Future Land Use Map with ten drop-in meetings scheduled through April 30. A meeting was held Friday evening at Athentic Brewing from 5:30 to 7 p.m.—staff explained the map and helped residents fill out the survey. WUGA
- ➤ On April 3, the Athens-Clarke County Planning Commission held a five-hour meeting to consider extending short-term rental sunset periods to ease housing affordability concerns and to review proposals for a downtown bar, a new library, parking changes and the Saye Building conversion. The commission approved petitions for the bar, library, a retail rezone and a multi-family development, tabled the rental and parking proposals and denied the Saye Building plan—and further votes are scheduled for May 1, July 15 and August 5.
