COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Community leaders and officials gathered in the parking lot of Athens-Clarke County Library on April 2 to dedicate a new solar panel canopy that will reduce energy use and support the city’s push for clean energy by 2035. Speakers including Athens Mayor Kelly Girtz and Georgia State Librarian Julie Walker said the project used a $100,000 EBSCO grant and matching SPLOST funds to help reach energy savings equivalent to 100 homes' use.  The Red & Black

  • The mother of a 21-year-old man fatally shot in January began an online petition on April 3 asking the state's top prosecutor—who is preparing to run for governor—to reopen the investigation.  FOX 5 Atlanta

CULTURE NEWS

  • The county Leisure Services Department announced the Unbroken Circle: The Musical Threads of Art Rosenbaum exhibition at the Lyndon House Arts Center, which has been on view since April 3 and will run through June 14. The show features Art Rosenbaum’s paintings and drawings and included a free artist reception on April 3 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. during regular gallery hours.  Classic City News

  • Athens-Clarke County jail held a graduation ceremony for the Re-Entry Success Program on April 2—where inmates earned support, education, and training for their transition back to the community. Program coordinator Cindy Billups and other instructors spoke about how the program equips participants with essential skills.  The Red & Black

HEALTH NEWS

  • Dynamic Cares appeared on Good Day Atlanta on Thursday (April 3rd) to discuss plans for an upcoming event during National Autism Acceptance Month. The local nonprofit said the event will promote autism acceptance in the community.  FOX 5 Atlanta

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Georgia men's baseball team defeated Queens University of Charlotte 21-1 on Tuesday, April 1 at Foley Field in Athens. The team showed strong pitching and hitting during the NCAA baseball game.  The Red & Black
  • Cedar Shoals junior striker Zulma Valdivieso-Gutierrez scored 107 career goals over three varsity seasons and netted 37 this season as her goal tally keeps rising. The Jaguars are 5-8 overall with 1-4 in 4A-Region 8 — they will play four more games until the season ends April 19.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • Georgia Bulldogs wide receiver Dillon Bell is set to take a bigger role in the running game as the team boosts its attack this season. He practices with his new brother Micah and coach Kirby Smart said Bell works hard plus shows the skill needed to help win games.  Athens Banner-Herald
