CRIME NEWS

  • On March 22 at about 2:20 a.m., UGA student Jia Patel, 20, was arrested on Milledge Avenue after police pulled him over for driving a 2022 Audi Q5 with completely shredded, flat tires while he failed sobriety tests and posted a blood-alcohol level of .202, twice the legal limit.  Classic City News
  • A judge — Lisa Lott — set an October trial for 49-year-old Edrick Faust, who is accused of killing Tara Baker in 2001, and will hold a hearing in September to check if defense lawyers are ready. Faust’s lawyer said his office still needs more time to study the evidence from the case.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • A 35-year-old woman was seriously injured when an acquaintance attacked her with a golf club during a money dispute at the University Oaks apartment of a 66-year-old man on March 21 and he was arrested for aggravated assault after posting a 5000-dollar bond on March 27.  Classic City News

  • The Athens-Clarke County Leisure Services Department is hosting two Candlelight Concerts at the Morton Theatre on April 11—one tribute to Adele at 6:30 p.m. and one tribute to Queen at 8:30 p.m., offering a live, multi-sensory musical experience under candlelight.  Classic City News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On April 1, the Athens-Clarke County Mayor and Commission voted on major issues — a resolution to keep the current board of elections, a 40-day hold on the rezoning request at 450 and 460 Gaines School Road, plans to preserve the historic Saye Building, and a resolution on Black minority inequities. Public input was strong and the rezoning request will be reviewed in May — community voices raised concerns on both local election integrity and historic preservation.  The Red & Black
  • Today, with the swearing-in of District 6 Commissioner Stephanie Johnson, half of Athens-Clarke County commissioners are Black, including District 9 Commissioner Ovita Thornton, District 3 Commissioner Tiffany Taylor, District 1 Commissioner Patrick Davenport and District 5 Commissioner Dexter Fisher. Thornton said the new commission may bring change to her large Hispanic & Black district by fixing long-held issues like stormwater fees and old septic systems while a UGA professor noted the shift could boost attention to Black community needs.  The Red & Black

HEALTH NEWS

  • Touchdowns 4 Tomorrow took place at UGA’s intramural fields on April 2 at 4 p.m.—the flag football tournament raised funds for suicide prevention and mental health services in memory of two UGA students who died by suicide, with about 500 registrants and $15,000 raised so far.  WUGA

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Froggie Spring Fling will take place Friday, April 18 from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at Sandy Creek Nature Center where people aged five and older register to learn about local amphibians and search the property, with fees of $5 for ACC residents and $8 for non-residents (bring a flashlight and wear closed-toed shoes).  Classic City News
