- ➤ Athens Area Habitat for Humanity finished the first affordable house in the Micah’s Creek project in East Athens—the Craftsman bungalow on Peter Street where Nikeria Sims and her sons moved in on March 26—and the boys will attend Gaines Elementary as part of a UGA study. The project will build 63 homes for families, artists, veterans and former foster children attending college and is funded with American Rescue Plan grants and local donations—covering solar panels paid for by Wells Fargo and the Kirby Smart Family Foundation—with a local artist set to create a stained glass window for each home. - ➤ Disney On Ice has partnered with select public libraries for a children’s reading program—children who read five or more books with an adult ticket purchase will get a free ticket to see Frozen & Encanto at Akins Ford Arena. - ➤ Clarke County School District Superintendent Robbie Hooker announced his retirement this week and will retire at the end of June; he will help the district with a leadership transition before the 2025-26 school year begins. The school board will discuss the search for his replacement at its meeting on April 17. Athens Banner-Herald
- ➤ On March 29, UGA held a launch event for Running Mate—an app that connects runners with verified companions in memory of Laken Riley, a nursing student murdered while running. Founder Dena Lewis said the app used background checks and live location tracking and will soon expand to other college campuses. Classic City News

- ➤ Rep. Houston Gaines, Rep. Marcus Wiedower, and Rep. Trey Rhodes introduced local legislation on March 25 to change the Athens-Clarke Board of Elections and Registration—if approved, the current board will be abolished on June 30 and a new five‐member board, including three chosen from lists nominated by Superior Court judges, will be established on July 1. - ➤ The Athens Anti-Discrimination Movement asked the Mayor and Commission to accept its resolution on racial inequities at Tuesday, April 1st meeting and called for a commitment to develop strong, enforceable ordinances to advance racial justice; the group said that commissioners had requested a 60-day extension on ordinance development since February 4th.
