CRIME NEWS

  • On March 18, a 71-year-old Athens man reported his bike stolen from his Moreland Avenue home and within minutes police recovered it and arrested a 44-year-old suspect—spotted riding the bike and later found hiding in a wooded area.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • A Clarke County grand jury indicted Kevin Moon, 31, of Westwood Drive on multiple counts of burglary and theft in connection with more than 30 storage unit break-ins—detectives recovered a stolen Land Rover and related items from his residence and a unit on Old Jefferson Road after his January arrest; he remains in pretrial detention and will be arraigned on April 15.  Classic City News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Yossi Kitchen offered a unique twist on Indian cuisine that blended local Athens flavors with traditional spices. The restaurant on Prince Avenue near downtown was visited by WUGA reporters Mary Ryan Howarth and Alexzundra Tillman—who noted its connection to local culture.  WUGA
  • On March 28, TEDxUGA held its 12th annual talk at the Morton Theatre under the theme 'Destination'—with seven speeches and around 530 guests attending. The event featured speakers from UGA and a community member, and all talks will be available online soon while the next event is scheduled for March 27, 2026 at the same venue.  The Red & Black

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students from UGA help locals file state and federal tax returns free of charge through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program—led by financial planning professor Lance Palmer. The program, now in its 20th year and having saved over $4 million in fees, will accept clients until April 11.  WUGA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Georgia lawmakers debated new regulations to limit THC levels in hemp products and ban hemp beverages while questioning the safety of these items; a House amendment allowed sales in package stores and postponed stricter measures as officials will study the industry further this summer — Joe Salome of The Georgia Hemp Company said his business will continue for another year.  Athens Banner-Herald

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Athens Free Clinic — which has connected uninsured residents with medical students and staff since 2018 — announced it has provided over $1 million in free care, marking a milestone in local health support.  WUGA

SPORTS NEWS

  • Due to forecast rain on Sunday, Georgia baseball moved its SEC home series with Auburn to a doubleheader Saturday with games at 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. at Foley Field (Sunday game ticket holders now attend the 11 a.m. match) and each game charges separate admission while the stadium is cleared between matches (both games are sold out with secondary tickets available).  Athens Banner-Herald
  • Georgia baseball outfielder Daniel Jackson hit a three-run walk-off homer in the bottom of the 10th inning to give the Bulldogs a 9-6 win over Auburn in a doubleheader—his first walk-off hit in college. Jackson, a transfer from Wofford, said he joined Georgia for chances like this.  Athens Banner-Herald
