  • On March 26, residents and UGA students enjoyed the spring warmth in Athens by spending time outdoors along campus lawns and downtown streets. CRIME NEWS

  • On the evening of March 15, Athens police arrested 36-year-old Aldin Sterling from Savannah after a Madison County couple returning from a date night saw him near their SUV on North Jackson Street and caught him with bags holding belongings worth over $500—he faces charges for theft and loitering/prowling.  Classic City News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Lawmakers approved House Bill 340 banning cellphones in elementary and middle schools starting next fall; the Georgia General Assembly passed the bill with strong bipartisan support and a 54-2 Senate vote. Gov. Brian Kemp is expected to sign the bill today (Distraction-Free Education Act), and schools will enforce device lock-ups for all nonexempt students beginning July 2026.  Classic City News

  • Minority students at UGA expressed varied concerns about economic and social challenges affecting local communities—some noted that the campus felt like a bubble compared to the real hardships in Athens. Meanwhile, the Athens-Clarke County Mayor and Commission delayed a proposed racial equality resolution with a 60-day postponement after discussion on Feb 4.  The Red & Black
