COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Athens nonprofit Sparrow's Nest held a banquet on March 24 at The Thompson House & Gardens in Bogart to celebrate 20 years of service, raising $212,000 for programs that help the unhoused and low-income residents. Nearly 150 guests attended the event as longtime board members were honored for their commitment.  Athens Banner-Herald

CULTURE NEWS

  • TEDxUGA 2026 is hosting its 13th annual Dark Mode event today at the Historic Morton Theatre downtown with doors opening at 6 p.m. and talks starting at 7 p.m., while organizers partnered with Trapeze for a watch party plus offer a livestream option.  WUGA
  • Athens hosts a weekend of events including the Flavor of Georgia contest at the Classic Center from 2 to 6 p.m. and a birding walk at Sandy Creek Nature Center from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday brings the Chess & Community Conference, a student film festival and a music jam.  Athens Banner-Herald

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Clarke County students were selected for the Governor’s Honors Program (which honors academic excellence) following a local announcement, with officials saying the initiative will spotlight top scholars soon.  The Red & Black

  • On Monday, the Senate Committee on Public Safety unanimously passed House Bill 1023, which would require weapons detection systems in every public school. The measure now awaits full Senate review as supporters stress its potential to enhance student safety.  WUGA
