CRIME NEWS

  • Athens-Clarke police said that 22-year-old Andrew Elasri, who posed as a teenager online, drove a 13-year-old girl from Louisiana to his apartment at the Woodlands of Athens in July 2023 and raped her, then in August 2023 forced himself on her without a condom—prompting her parents to report her confirmed pregnancy and authorities to indict him on multiple charges.  Classic City News
  • Masked burglars attempted to remove the door of Agora Vintage on East Broad Street last week but abandoned their plan when a University of Georgia police car passed by—causing about $500 in damage—and a stolen car used in the act was later found abandoned.  Classic City News

  • Ari’s Battle of the Bands, the third annual tribute to University of Georgia student Ariana Zarse, was held on Saturday, March 22 at Paloma Park in Athens—Zarse was killed in a hit and run downtown in 2021. Local bands performed live—bringing the community together to honor her legacy.  The Red & Black

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Georgia lawmakers have worked for years on bills to control artificial intelligence and plan to require state agencies to post their AI use online by year-end while local governments must share their plans by the end of 2027—two other bills would make it illegal to use AI to create child pornography and protect customer data. These proposals are set to guide how AI will be used and watched as the technology grows.  Athens Banner-Herald

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Harlem Globetrotters played a game at Akins Ford Arena in Athens on Saturday, March 22 and beat the Washington Generals 117—115.  The Red & Black
  • The LSU Tigers defeated Georgia softball 10-2 on Saturday at Jack Turner Stadium when a run rule ended the game after six innings — 2,297 fans attended and pitcher Lilli Backes took the loss.  The Red & Black
  • The Georgia women’s swim and dive team finished 16th with 58 points at the NCAA Division I Championships in Federal Way, Wash after four days of competition. Senior Abby McCulloh finished fourth in the 1,650 yard freestyle and sophomore Helena Jones earned All-American honors in the 100 yard freestyle — the team now turns its attention to the men’s championships from March 26-29.  The Red & Black
  • Georgia softball freshman Mua Williams hit a grand slam in the bottom of the third inning on Sunday that turned a 2-run deficit into a 5-run lead for an 11-3 win over LSU in five innings. Her family flew in from Hawaii+ and her play helped raise the Lady Bulldogs' record to 23-8 as they look ahead to upcoming games.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • The No. 10 Georgia gymnastics team tied for third in the first session of the SEC Gymnastics Championships on Saturday at Legacy Arena in Birmingham and shared an overall seventh rank with Auburn after scoring 195.950. Co-head coach Ryan Roberts said the team will work to improve as regionals begin April 2nd — aiming to build on strong scores from gymnasts Csenge Bácskay, Eryn Williams, and Lily Smith.  The Red & Black
  • No. 4 Georgia blasted six home runs in a 17-2 win over No. 13 Florida at Condron Ballpark on Saturday afternoon—clinching the SEC road series for the Bulldogs. The team will complete a sweep in the series finale scheduled for Sunday at 1:02 p.m.  The Red & Black
