CRIME NEWS

  • A Clarke County grand jury indicted David Lee Wilhelm, 51, on charges of aggravated assault — possession of a firearm during a felony related to the January 26 shooting of 54-year-old Anthony Williams on Nellie B Avenue. Wilhelm is detained without bail and will face arraignment on May 5.  Classic City News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Georgia HB 112 was adopted by the state Senate with a 30—23 vote and passed by the House, and it now awaits Governor Brian Kemp's signature. If signed, the bill will grant a one-time tax credit for income tax returns filed for 2023 and 2024, offering $250 for individual filers, $375 for heads of households, and $500 for married couples filing jointly.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • The ACCgov Housing and Community Development will host a series of free events in April for National Fair Housing Month and National Community Development Week. The events will include a Tenants’ Rights Forum on April 10 at Dougherty St. Governmental Auditorium, a Fair Housing Rights Lunch and Learn on April 23 at ACC Library, and a Community Development Resource Fair on April 26 at ACC Library — all open to the public.  Athens-Clarke County
  • On Friday, the Georgia Department of Driver Services reminded Athens drivers to check for a black or gold star on their licenses to meet Real ID requirements—residents must bring original documents to a local Customer Service Center before May 7 to avoid TSA restrictions.  Athens Banner-Herald

  • UGA researchers at the Isakson Center in Athens are testing gut bugs to make Levodopa for Parkinson’s treatment—aiming to keep drug levels steady and reduce side effects. The team is also developing a skin test for early detection and works with experts from many fields to advance new therapies.  The Red & Black

  • After a season troubled by drops, Georgia football has added seven new wide receivers including transfers Zachariah Branch and Noah Thomas—who bring size and skill—to boost the unit as returning players already show better catching at spring practice.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • Bulldog Haven is a cemetery on Oconee Hill near Sanford Stadium that serves as the final resting place for over 100 former Georgia football players, coaches, and their families. Established by the University of Georgia Football Letterman’s Club in 2008, the site honors local football legends and draws fans during game weekends—preserving a cherished piece of our athletic history.  The Red & Black
