CRIME NEWS

  • Two Classic City students were arrested after a melee at Clarke Central on February 26 when one allegedly kicked a teacher's knee and another punched a student—actions that led to charges and a pending arraignment on April 17.  Classic City News
  • Georgia football wide receiver Nitareon 'Nitro' Tuggle was arrested on charges of speeding and reckless driving on Thursday morning and was booked just before 2 a.m. before posting a $26 bond (both charges are misdemeanors) (he was released less than an hour later).  The Red & Black

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students at UGA can join certificate programs to learn focused skills and work with industry experts in areas like music business, sustainability, and cybersecurity. These programs offer hands-on projects and campus tours—giving students real-world experience to plan their future careers.  The Red & Black
  • The UGA University Council voted on March 19 to shift Tuesday and Thursday class times to other weekdays, extend class periods by five minutes, and set the first period to start at 8:15 a.m.—these changes will go into effect in spring for a one-week shorter semester.  The Red & Black
  • United Campus Workers held a protest in Downtown Athens on March 19 to support higher education and living wages—people carried signs and pamphlets to spread their message—and the event underscored local demand for change.  The Red & Black

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Local fire officials warned residents today — after extinguishing several brush and grass fires near Barnett Shoals Road and Idylwood Drive — that high fire danger from low humidity and strong winds may spark more fires if outdoor burning continues.  Classic City News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Athens-Clarke County businesses must renew their Business Occupation Tax certificate by Tuesday, April 1 to avoid a 10% penalty on late submissions. New and home-based businesses must submit their applications before starting operations.  Athens-Clarke County
