COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Last week in Athens the Great Southland Stampede Rodeo held its 50th event and UGA hosted gymnastics meets, baseball and basketball games, along with a football Pro Day—photos also highlighted a student protest for Mahmoud Khalil and a teacher honored at a school board meeting. CRIME NEWS

  • Former UGA football player Ahkil Crumpton, 27, killed a RaceTrac clerk during a robbery and was convicted on federal charges last year. He will face a state murder trial on July 14 in Superior Court in Watkinsville while he remains in Clarke County Jail.  Classic City News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Clarke County School District announced that interim principal Derrick Maxwell at Clarke Middle School and interim principal April Braswell at Coile Middle School are full-time leaders effective immediately—both have led their schools since July 2024 after a rigorous search process that included input from local school governance teams and families.  Classic City News
  • Clarke Central High School will host the international exhibit 'Anne Frank: A History for Today' on March 20 from 6 to 7 p.m. at 350 South Milledge Ave in Athens — the event will include a public reception with music, traditional Jewish foods and student guides trained by the USC Anne Frank Center.  The Red & Black

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Athens-Clarke County officials are seeking qualified residents for 34 volunteer positions on 12 policy-making boards, with applications available online or at City Hall until April 4; interviews are scheduled for April 17 or April 21 and appointments will be made on May 6.  Athens-Clarke County

HEALTH NEWS

  • Athens pollen on Sunday was low at 2.4 but quickly spiked to highs between 10.1 and 11.5 from Monday to Friday, raising concern for allergy sufferers. Health officials advise residents to keep windows closed and limit time outdoors—especially when temperatures are warm.  Athens Banner-Herald

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Georgia women’s tennis team beat Ole Miss 4-1 on Sunday to extend its winning streak to 11—and improve its SEC record to 14-1. The Bulldogs earned their 25th win over the Rebels in the last 28 matchups and will return to Athens on Friday to face Arkansas at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.  The Red & Black
  • The Georgia men's baseball team faced Kentucky on March 14th at Foley Field in Athens and won 12-6 in the NCAA game.  The Red & Black
  • Georgia basketball ended a 10-year absence when its name appeared on the NCAA Tournament bracket during CBS's selection show, and the Bulldogs, now a No. 9 seed, will play Gonzaga at 4:35 p.m. in Wichita on Thursday. Experts predict early-round upsets — they expect Florida and Duke to reach the Final Four with the Gators set to win the championship.  Athens Banner-Herald
