COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Backpack Project of Athens will host a resource fair at Lay Park Community Center on Saturday, March 21 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. to offer free food, healthcare, clothing (with employment resources included) to help Athenians in need.  The Red & Black

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Ellianos Coffee operates drive-thru only on Highway 29 and serves a range of coffees, freezes, and energy drinks with warm service. It is open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday.  Athens Banner-Herald

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Patrick G. Snead has been named head of middle school at Athens Academy for the upcoming school year; he previously served in multiple roles from 2005 to 2018 (returning home to lead with extensive experience).  The Red & Black
  • The Clarke County School District will host its annual transition fair on Thursday, March 19, from 9:30 a.m. to noon at the Vernon Payne Meeting Hall on Prince Avenue, featuring 30+ vendors. A free lunch-and-learn session from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. will offer resource information for adapted curriculum students.  The Red & Black

SPORTS NEWS

  • Georgia basketball will play its first NCAA Tournament game on March 18 in Buffalo — fans can buy tickets online with prices ranging from about $87 for single sessions to $519 for full sessions.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • Freshman Cole Johnson from Oconee County High made a leaping catch Sunday, Mar. 15 that robbed Tennessee of a two-run, go-ahead home run and helped Georgia baseball secure an 8-7 win at Foley Field — his teammates celebrated his effort following the rally.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • Georgia women's basketball earned a 7-seed in the NCAA Tournament and will face the winner of the First Four game between Virginia and Arizona State in Iowa City at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
