  • Athens Area Habitat for Humanity is developing Micah’s Creek in East Inner Athens to provide homes for local families. Residents will join a University of Georgia study at Gaines Elementary on how stable housing improves education, finances, and social outcomes.  WUGA

HEALTH NEWS

  • Dr. John Drake of the Odum School of Ecology explained theories about the bird flu that has disrupted poultry and dairy industries, infected dozens, and caused one death in Louisiana — he detailed why the virus has led to fewer human deaths despite its spread.  WUGA
  • A study by UGA College of Public Health finds that environmental factors affect dementia risk in our community. The meta-analysis by Assistant Professor Suhang Song (which reviewed over 70 studies) shows that air pollution and living near busy roads raise risk, while access to green spaces and walkable neighborhoods lower it.  The Red & Black
  • In Athens, the union representing maintenance workers at the town’s largest hospital used giant inflatables to draw attention to workers’ allegations against hospital leadership (the union now aims to secure a new contract).  WUGA

SPORTS NEWS

  • The UGA women’s gymnastics team competed against the University of Oklahoma on Friday, March 14, 2025 at Stegeman Coliseum in Athens — the team lost with a final score of 198.475—197.975.  The Red & Black
  • Catcher Henry Hunter said that Georgia won 12-6 against Kentucky in the SEC opener and stressed the team’s resilience and confidence.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • Georgia head coach Wes Johnson praised his team’s depth and resilience in their SEC opening win over Kentucky — the Bulldogs overcame early adversity in the game.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • Georgia football head coach Kirby Smart opened Bulldogs spring practices on Tuesday and said the team will run 15 sessions over more than four weeks while focusing on recovery. He discussed a spring game with athletic director Josh Brooks but did not confirm the event (the final scrimmage is set for April 12).  Athens Banner-Herald
