CULTURE NEWS

  • Athens-based Creature Comforts Brewing Co. had its Abstract beer label ranked No. 7 nationally in USA Today's 10Best Readers' Choice Awards as reported on Mar. 4, and it also serves as the Official Taproom for the University of Georgia (reflecting its deep college roots).  Athens Banner-Herald
  • Historic Athens Welcome Center opened its Women’s History Month exhibit 'The Women Who Changed Athens' on Wednesday from 4 to 6 p.m., featuring stories of local women from fields like journalism and medicine; the exhibit remains open for public viewing throughout March.  The Red & Black

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Georgia has named two speakers for commencement — former football star DJ Shockley for undergraduates and dean Meg Amstutz for graduates — as it prepares for the 2026 ceremonies.  WUGA
  • The Clarke County Board of Education announced an updated superintendent search timeline. In March the board will review 32 applications + interview top candidates mid-April before revealing finalists in May and voting on the final candidate at a later meeting.  The Red & Black

SPORTS NEWS

  • The University of Georgia softball team defeated Georgia State (9-1) at Jack Turner Softball Stadium on Wednesday, March 4 in Athens.  The Red & Black
  • Georgia's Lady Bulldogs are set to face Kentucky today (11 a.m. ET) at Bon Secours Wellness Arena in Greenville during the SEC Tournament rematch. The team, having won against Kentucky earlier in the season, looks to build on its momentum in this key game.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • Clarke Central and North Oconee are hosting the Track and Field Invitational on March 7 at the new Spec Towns Complex (2320 S Milledge Ave, across from Jack Turner Stadium). Twenty-eight schools will compete starting at 8 a.m. for athletes and 8:30 a.m. for spectators.  Athens Banner-Herald
