COMMUNITY NEWS

  • UGA officials announced after Christmas that Legion Pool, a historic WPA facility on campus, will be demolished due to water leakage + low usage; demolition is set to begin tomorrow.  Flagpole

CULTURE NEWS

  • Athens-Clarke County announced Amanda Dzimianski as the new Poet Laureate for the 2026 — 2028 term; she will make her first public appearance at the Flight of the Fireflies Lantern Parade on Saturday, March 7 at Dudley Park.  WUGA
  • Jesse Jackson, whose words once energized Athens at College Square, died Feb. 18 at 84, and his message of unity continues to inspire. Local community members remember his passion for civil rights and his call to come together as one.  Flagpole

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UGA will begin demolishing Legion Pool tomorrow off Lumpkin Street near Baxter Street on campus to create a student event space (including sand volleyball courts) despite opposition from Friends of Legion Pool.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • The ACCFD's all-female crew took part in the Women in Science Open House on Saturday, Feb. 28 at Sandy Creek Nature Center, where they explained how STEM principles inform modern firefighting and public safety. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mayor Kelly Girtz, Historic Athens, and a UGA professor unveiled a new website last week that details the R-51 urban renewal project north of downtown. The site offers maps, photos, and records and explains how the project reshaped neighborhoods — such as Lickskillet and The Bottom — for current viewers.  Flagpole
  • Former Atlanta mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms campaigned for governor on Feb. 26 in Athens as she stressed her local roots and efforts to make living more affordable. She cited a $700 million investment that preserved 7,000 affordable homes while planning to target corporate landlords and expand Medicaid and free technical education.  Flagpole
  • The Clarke County Sheriff’s Office has opened registration for the six-week Academy for Community Engagement—offering hands-on experience in daily operations with a Citizens’ Firearms Class and a Virtual Reality demonstration. The weekly course runs from April 8 to May 13 on County Farm Rd from 6pm to 8pm.  WUGA

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Georgia Department of Health published inspection scores for local restaurants today, showing ratings from 75 to 99. A review at Porterhouse Grill found a bug light placed too near food prep (score 86) and led to prompt corrections during the inspection.  Athens Banner-Herald

SPORTS NEWS

  • Georgia women’s basketball begins its SEC Tournament run in Greenville today after finishing the season 22-8 with a No.8 seed and first-round bye—some experts project a No.7 seed for the NCAA tournament field that will be announced on Sunday, March 16.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • The University of Georgia men’s basketball team beat the University of Alabama 98-88 on Tuesday, March 3 at Stegeman Coliseum in Athens.  The Red & Black
  • Georgia basketball bracketology updates show the Bulldogs may secure an 8 or 9 seed ahead of Selection Sunday on March 15, with matchups against teams including Miami and coach Mike White leading a team on the verge of its third straight 20-win season (projections vary).  Athens Banner-Herald
