- ➤ Last week, Athens showcased a range of local events as Terrapin Beer Company held its Wake-n-Bake Off and a downtown vigil honored those affected by detention while live performances and UGA sports games provided community pride. - ➤ A new website documented urban renewal and displacement of Black neighborhoods in Downtown Athens on Friday, Mar. 2. The Mayor’s Office, Historic Athens, and the University of Georgia’s Community Mapping Lab collaborated on research showing nearly 400 households were displaced in the 1960s. WUGA
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Hummingbirds are expected to arrive in Georgia soon; most areas have seen them since late February while northern parts may not welcome them until early April — local birdwatchers can attract these species with red-flowered plants or a homemade nectar solution. Athens Banner-Herald

- ➤ Georgians will set clocks forward on Sunday, Mar. 8 at 2 a.m. for Daylight Saving Time; smartphones update automatically, but manual clocks should be adjusted—ensuring evenings last longer until clocks fall back on Nov. 1. Athens Banner-Herald

- ➤ Classic City Roller Derby will celebrate 20 years with a bout on Sunday, Mar. 8 at The Classic Center in downtown Athens. Doors open at 4:30 p.m. and tickets are $15 in advance and $18 at the door (kids 5 and under free). Athens Banner-Herald
