  • The Laken Hope Foundation is hosting the 'Run for Your Life' 5K and memorial at Tate Plaza today starting at 8 a.m. with a service at 10 a.m.—Representative Mike Collins will hold a Q&A as the event honors Laken Riley and supports the foundation with most proceeds benefiting the cause.  WUGA

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Local restaurant owner Joe Nedza bought the famous Weaver D's property to honor Dexter Weaver and plans a new comfort food restaurant. Weaver D's, known since 1986, will close next Thursday, Feb. 26 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. & Nedza aims to open his spot by early-to-mid April.  Athens Banner-Herald

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Applications are open for a building committee for the West Broad School Complex repurposing project. Community members can apply online or at the Clarke County School District Office (8 a.m. to 4:45 p.m.) until 5 p.m. on Thursday, March 5, with up to four slots available.  The Red & Black
  • The University of Georgia launched its new School of Medicine in Athens on Feb. 20, opening applications for 60 students while aiming to ease the state’s critical physician shortage. Founding Dean Shelley Nuss confirmed preliminary accreditation (the school is the state’s second public medical school).  FOX 5 Atlanta

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Georgia gardeners preparing for spring should avoid more than 80 invasive species, including Silverberry, English Ivy, Japanese Honeysuckle, Monkey Grass, Elephant Ears, and Bradford Pear, as experts warn these plants may appear in commercial sales. They recommend native options like Eastern Red Columbine (the State Botanical Garden’s Spring Bloomer).  Athens Banner-Herald
