CRIME NEWS

  • A local mother of three said a thief stole $900 in SNAP benefits from her account in January, leaving her without the expected funds.  FOX 5 Atlanta

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Athens educators shared new ways to use remote learning and updated math to help kids thrive in a changing world. The three experts shared their ideas yesterday and continue to guide local schools as teaching methods evolve.  FOX 5 Atlanta

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Georgia Department of Health inspected Athens restaurants from Jan. 27 to Feb. 3, finding some with perfect safety scores and others with violations such as mislabeled chemical spray bottles, ice buildup, and live roaches (La Montana Mexican Restaurant). The report aims to keep the community informed on food safety.  Athens Banner-Herald

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Bulldogs Five, UGA’s first black scholarship football players, will release a documentary that shares their groundbreaking story. The film is set to debut soon.  FOX 5 Atlanta
  • Athens-area high school basketball region tournaments are underway with games starting Monday, Feb. 16 and wrapping up Friday, Feb. 20 — venues include Winder-Barrow and Cedar Shoals while Athens Christian girls and boys already claimed GIAA Class 4A titles.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • Six Athens-area high school wrestling programs won gold medals at state traditionals held in Morrow and Gainesville earlier this month. Jefferson and Athens Christian led their divisions (earning multiple first-place finishes across weight classes) in these competitions.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • Former Bulldogs running back Robert Edwards joins Georgia football’s support staff for the 2026 season. His appointment was confirmed Monday night by his brother Terrence Edwards (a local source) after Edwards spent 17 years coaching high school football.  Athens Banner-Herald
