CULTURE NEWS

  • University of Georgia Performing Arts Center will host Japanese drumming troupe Drum Tao for two events Friday, Feb. 6. The group will perform its newest production The Best at 7:30 p.m. at Hugh Hodgson Concert Hall and hold a 10 a.m. session for young audiences with $5 admission.  Flagpole
  • With Valentine's Day near, a revived look at Victorian-era florigraphy shows how each flower carries a secret meaning. Florists and locals can explore how symbols like red roses and white lilies help communicate emotions (from romance to caution) without spoken words.  Flagpole
  • Taylor-Grady House will host Home & Family: A Printmaking Exhibit for Black History Month from Feb. 6–28, featuring local UGA student artists and Black Artists Alliance members alongside Atlanta artist Jamaal Barber.  Flagpole

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Adam Shirley announced his run for the Clarke County School Board District 7 seat and aims to expand pre-K access and support local district policies—his background includes 18 years in education. Incumbent LaKeisha Gantt will serve until her term ends in December.  WUGA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Protesters gathered at the Classic Center in Athens on Feb. 4 to oppose Customs and Border Protection’s booth at UGA’s Spring Career and Internship Fair (they carried signs to express their disapproval).  The Red & Black

SPORTS NEWS

  • Georgia women's basketball holds a .500 SEC record at 4 to 4 after eight conference games — the Lady Bulldogs outscored opponents overall by 408 points. Coach Katie Abraham-Henderson said the team will work on closing out quarters as it prepares for matchups against Tennessee and Vanderbilt.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • Athens area high school seniors have signed to join college sports through NCAA Division I and II teams + signings from November to February include athletes from Athens Academy, Commerce, Jefferson, North Oconee, Oconee County and Winder-Barrow competing in football, track, swimming and cheerleading.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • Kirby Smart’s Bulldogs signed a 2026 class that ended their streak of top-four recruiting classes — they are ranked No. 6 overall and No. 2 in the SEC per the 247 Sports Composite. The rankings reflect a shift from traditional recruiting to a focus on the transfer portal.  Athens Banner-Herald
