COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Protesters gathered at The Arch (a downtown landmark) yesterday to voice concerns over Iran's actions amid growing unrest overseas.  The Red & Black

CULTURE NEWS

  • University of Georgia's student theater group Next Act performed its 'American Dream' show at Athentic Brewing Company on Friday, Jan. 30 in Athens, featuring musical numbers from Hamilton, The Great Gatsby and Chicago.  The Red & Black
  • Athens Comedy Fest returns as an annual event on May 1 and 2 at the Historic Morton Theatre with Karen Morgan hosting. The festival will feature national touring comedians and local talent (full lineup to be announced) to boost Athens' reputation as a comedy hub.  Classic City News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A winter storm warning covers northeast Georgia and forecasts show Athens may see 3 to 5 inches of snow today — flurries began Friday night and snowfall is expected to peak this afternoon. Residents should prepare for freezing temperatures and strong wind chills.  Athens Banner-Herald

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Brian Kemp declared a State of Emergency Friday as a winter storm is set to bring up to six inches of snow in parts of Georgia starting at noon today *affecting eastern counties including areas near Athens*, with GDOT crews pretreating roads for safety.  Athens Banner-Herald

SPORTS NEWS

  • Georgia athletic director Josh Brooks said the Bulldogs are reviewing adding corporate patches on jerseys this season now that the NCAA cleared logos on uniforms — each patch is limited to four square inches. School officials will decide at the Georgia Center if the move fits key partnerships.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • On Friday, Jan. 30, Georgia gymnastics held a quad meet at Stegeman Coliseum at 7 p.m. against Temple, Central Michigan & Fisk, streamed live on SEC Network. The team now holds a record of 2 to 1 after a win over LSU earlier this month and aims to maintain its top five ranking.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • The University of Georgia is reviewing whether to add women’s flag football after the NCAA named it an emerging sport — the school last added a sport in 2003 and already has a club team competing in the Fiesta Bowl Flag Football Classic in April, while others like Nebraska plan varsity teams.  Athens Banner-Herald
