CULTURE NEWS

  • The Athens Branch of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History will present the Freedom Film Series in February. The series features four free Sunday afternoon films on Feb. 1, 8, 15, and 22 at local venues showcasing Black history and culture.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • Athens Downtown Development Authority, Morton Theatre Corporation and the Unified Government invite professional artists to design a mural for the theatre lobby that will celebrate its historic role in the community — submissions are due by Feb. 27 at 5 p.m.  Classic City News
  • Withdrawal, an independent drama filmed in Athens in 2023 and written by Aaron Strand, will debut at Ciné on Friday, Feb. 6 and run until Feb. 12 — screenings take place at 234 W. Hancock Ave in downtown and feature local hosts.  Athens Banner-Herald

  • The University of Georgia hosted its spring Engagement Fair at Tate Student Center on Tuesday, Jan. 27, showcasing over 300 student organizations for campus engagement + night two will be held tomorrow at the same venue.  The Red & Black

HEALTH NEWS

  • Garrett Reid of the American Red Cross said blood drives were canceled yesterday due to cold weather—triggering an emergency shortage. The agency urges donors to help meet the need as the shortage continues.  FOX 5 Atlanta

  • Georgia football coach Kirby Smart visited Savannah Christian and Calvary Day on Tuesday to meet with high school players during recruiting visits. He did not extend scholarship offers but opened the door for these athletes to possibly join the team in Athens (he offered practical training tips to boost performance).  Athens Banner-Herald
  • The Georgia women’s basketball team was ranked (no. 25) in the USA TODAY Sports coaches poll on Jan. 27 after a three-game winning streak and will face Alabama in Athens on Jan. 29 at 6:30 p.m. for a key SEC contest.  Athens Banner-Herald
