CRIME NEWS

  • University of Georgia officials are investigating Kappa Sigma for hazing after a pledge reportedly became ill from forced acts such as excessive drinking, crawling, and other risky practices that led him to seek medical care three times; the inquiry began in September and is still active.  Classic City News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Former UGA president Michael Adams died on Sunday, Jan. 25 at age 77 — his leadership from 1997 to 2013 is honored on social media by community members.  Athens Banner-Herald
  • Iranian students at UGA continue to face stress and isolation as unrest in Iran disrupts their ability to stay in touch (limited internet access has cut off family contact) amid rising concerns over future travel and visa issues.  The Red & Black

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • An ice storm passed through Athens and nearby towns this past weekend—weather data showed the city recorded 0.3 inches of freezing rain while areas like Jefferson reached up to 0.75 inches. Residents experienced light accumulations that may have made roads slippery.  Athens Banner-Herald

HEALTH NEWS

  • Athens restaurant inspections by the Georgia Department of Public Health from Jan. 17-26 revealed that the Subway on Jefferson Rd earned a 99 while the one on Hull Rd scored 87 because of food prep violations (including improper watch use).  Athens Banner-Herald

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Athens staple Wing Kingh has introduced exotic sauce options such as Fruity Pebbles and strawberry hot honey for its wings. The food truck debuted the add-ons at the MLK Day Parade & Festival on Jan. 19 and now charges extra on its $12.50 plate (up to $3) at local events.  Athens Banner-Herald
