- ➤ After turning 40 this year, the Athens Area Homeless Shelter closed its Barber Street location on Jan. 24 and relocated its services to Bray Street, where it runs a transitional housing program (aiming to expand its emergency shelter capacity) to better serve local families. WUGA
- ➤ The Leisure Services Department announces its 2026 spring programs featuring arts, environmental science, recreation, sports, and holiday events for both adults and children. ACC residents will register online starting Saturday, Jan. 31 at 9:00 a.m. + non-residents will register Monday, Feb. 2 at noon. Athens-Clarke County

- ➤ Local author Hien Nguyen released her YA novel featuring water ghosts and long-lost twins to explore themes of diaspora identity, grief, and inequality. She discussed the book's horror elements during an interview with WUGA after its publication yesterday. WUGA
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Athens Academy’s middle school drama department will perform 'Annie, Jr.' — open to the public — at the Bertelsmann Presentation Hall on campus from Friday, Feb. 6 to Sunday, Feb. 8, with shows on Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 2:30 p.m. Tickets cost $2 for students and seniors and $5 for adults. - ➤ Athens-area school districts, private schools, and colleges will announce whether Monday classes will remain open due to weather and road conditions. - ➤ Freezing rain and ice are expected to hit the Athens area Saturday night, with heavier icing and temperatures dipping into the low 20s Sunday night into Monday.
